| While the first days of September appeared to indicate a “vintage of the century”, high humidity and showers caused a good deal of furrowed brows among the wine producers.
Fortunately, the soils of hills around Langenlois provide good drainage.
Perhaps this will be a difficult vintage after all; this means a great deal of work dividing the good berries from the bad, and it will result in great quality differences between the wines: good wines will be possible only if the producers invest the necessary manual labour and sort all grapes according to strict quality criteria.
Our main task at the moment is to remove foliage around the grapes in order to allow the breeze to dry off the grapes more quickly.
The winners of this year will probably be Grüner Veltliner, Pinot Noir and St Laurent grapes with their very airy bunches due to couluring (the failure of individual blossoms to set fruit) during the spring. The result is a smaller yield, but also a greater resistance against rotting, which promises high qualities.
The score in the match Grüner Veltliner vs. Riesling stands at 1:0 so far. |
