Now, in late September, the sekt base wine has not yet been harvested entirely.

A few rays of sun are still missing for the ideal power of the cuvee. The 80% making up the lighter, fresher part, have been brought in already.

We still have to wait a little until we can begin the main harvest. The greenness and vigour of the leaves in the vineyards is extraordinary for this time of year. The leaves are still fully functional as assimilation mechanism and are yearning for the rays of the autumn sun.

Our bunches of grapes, which were cut in half earlier in the year to avoid illnesses, create a pointillist landscape, speckled by countless dark blue dabs in the green leaf wall.

The taste of the berries is fine and aromatic, fresh without being aggressive, animating and full of juiciness.

The great ally of the moment is the green covering of the rows with its many roots, which help to extract the moisture of the autumn showers, thus preventing that too much water rises into the berries, causing them to burst.

The Pinot Noir grapes have now reached 17.5 KMW (Klosterneuburger Mostwaage, a measure for determining sugar content) and are no longer ideal for sekt base wine. We will leave them in the vineyards until the beginning of the red wine harvest.
An Indian summer – will it ever come? – would create great wines.
