Late September, the first day of autumn, a splendid, sunny day. The grapes taste wonderful right now, not too sweet, not too acidic, the foliage is still deep green and benefits from the autumn sun. The rainy September has lowered the sugar values and therefore the potential alcohol, but the cool nights have prevented rotting.
Now the winemaker faces the year´s most difficult decision: whether to produce a light, fresh and pleasant wine now or to risk all and to wait for the coolness of autumn, for more sun, for storms and rain - and to have the chance of harvesting a truly great wine later.
We will do both. The base wine for the sparklers, the rosé and the light Grüner Veltliner are being harvested now in dry weather and quickly. Other vineyards will wait until October or even November.
The family wealth is hanging in the vineyards. One part will be brought in now. Another will be subjected to the vagaries of the October weather. |
