| The early stages of the harvest have begun with the grapes for the base wine for our sekt. During this pre harvest of light, green and fresh grapes we also remove the denser leaves which were left hanging above the grapes to prevent sunburn. This thinning out of the foliage creates better ventilation and allows the grapes to dry off more effectively after showers, and to benefit from the mild autumn sun. This is a rather moist September, but the grapes dry quickly in the autumn breeze.
Now the herbs growing between the rows of vines begin to play a crucial role. This varied community of plants uses up and evaporates any excess moisture in the soil in its leaves, stems and roots. During intense rainfalls this green carpet also protects against erosion and against the loss of precious soil.
Later, when wind and sun have dried off the soil, we will cut these herbs and allow the soil organisms to use the grasses and herbs to revitalize the soil. Then we will plow under the cut herbs which will nourish the vines and release the energy they have stored into the vineyard.
The main harvest will begin in two to three weeks. |
