A stunning autumn makes good the rainy summer, and night temperatures
down to 5°C guarantee that the grapes remain fresh and healthy.
Our different varietals are harvested one after the other: Langenloiser
Spiegel – Pinot Blanc and Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, St Laurent and
Zweigelt.
This week, we will harvest Pinot Noir, Grüner Veltliner Kamptaler Terrassen, and a few more mature barrels of Chardonnay.
The grapes are sorted in the vineyard. The best parts are transferred
into the cellar in small boxes, imperfect parts are cut onto the ground
– a task that requires great concentration and cannot be replicated by
any machine. Machine harvest, still on the rise, squashes a kind of
grape pulp into large containers. Brownish sludge arrives at the cellar
door instead of fresh grapes.
This is where the dramatic differences in wine quality lie.
By and large, the 2005 vintage is good, but it is in the hands of the
producers whether they spoil material with considerable potential
through lack of care, or invest all their knowledge and efforts into
extracting all the grapes can yield. |
