During the past week, all our dreams came true! Nighttime temperatures fell to exactly 0°C, and during the days, a strong sun (accompanied by cool temperatures) saw to it that there was no excess moisture on the grapes.

The taste of the grapes grew to an incredible concentration and finesse. “We haven’t had grapes like this since 1947,” Wilhelm Bründlmayer senior, Willy’s father, said.

We are now right in the main harvest, and we are harvesting our greatest vineyards at full steam: Heiligenstein, Steinmassel, Loiser Berg and Berg Vogelsang have all partially been harvested. On Saturday, the first rows of Käferberg were harvested at 21°KMW, a healthily high degree of sugar. We have scheduled harvesting of the Lamm vineyard for Monday.

The grapes we harvested already have one interesting characteristc: the level of acidity stays absolutely stable during fermerntation, it even increaes slightly, which means that the vinous acid, which otherwise crystallizes out in the barrel, has formed this year already in the grapes. We expect the 2003 vintage to give maturity as well as power, freshness as well as structure.
