The Beginning of the Harvest

The first selections began on Monday 8 September. We are very excited about the 2003 vintage. The only comparable vintage in living memory is the legendary year 1947, when Wilhelm Bründlmayer senior
(88 years old today) received the Austrian State Prize for his Zöbinger Heiligenstein Riesling from the hands of the later Federal Chancellor Leopold Figl - the only State Prize ever given for a wine!

First, we will harvest about half of the grapes on the youngest vines. This will make a barrel of very light wine, to be sold by the litre, as Bankett, or as our "Sommer L+T".

Then we will also (only if the weather holds!) start harvesting the grapes for our base wines for our sparkling wines. The most suitable grapes, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Blanc and Pinot Gris, will be selected out for the sparkling wine. 2003 will probably have an uncommonly high proportion of Chardonnay, as these grapes have retained most freshness. The warmth of the Pinot grapes is less suitable for sparkling wines in this hot year than in other years.
