Langenloiser Spiegel Grauburgunder 2006
The name of the vineyard „Spiegel“(mirror) is said to derive from Latin “spectaculum”(“look-out”) In the ancient times of the “Limes”, the Romans probably used the spot to observe the Germanic tribes to the north of the Danube. However, still up to now most of the folks think that the name is linked to the convex vaulting of the 300 meter hill, a kind of “mirror” to the sky.
Langenloiser Spiegel is a blend of 90% Pinot Gris and 10% Pinot Blanc. We had more Pinot Blanc in its predecessors when after replanting part of the Pinot Gris vineyards were still too young to be used for this reserve. Anyway the character of the wine is determined by the very chalky loess soil of the Langenloiser Spiegel vineyard. It lends minerals and body to the wines. The height and exposure of the vineyard with perfect aeration allow to harvest the burgundy varieties a bit later. A portion of the Pinot Gris ferments in 300 liter Austrian oak barrels and then matures in a 2500 l barrel before assemblage.
Yield: 4000 liters per hectare
Alcohol: 13,5 %
Tasting note: Brilliant pale yellow, complex bouquet of exotic fruit supported by nutty, toasty aromas and a hint of spice and tobacco. An elegant attractive wine with a very rich texture, yet still refreshing and very appetizing.
Food pairing: From traditional Austrian to Asian cuisine; from pork scallop to stir fried meat and vegetables; this wine is a very charming partner to a large range of dishes without imposing its own character but supporting the tastes of a variety of ingredients. |
