Anselm – St. Laurent 2002
The third and most recent top blend of Austria’s most charming native red-wine variety St. Laurent carries the name of the Bründlmayer’s youngest son, Anselm.
Small quantities of thick-skinned berries are sourced from the oldest vines (at an average of 45 years) and result in wines with intense spicy aromas and plenty of extract. Most of the deeply enrooted old vines grow on rocky soils thus enhancing mineral nuances while others grow on richer loamy plots at the bottom of the hills and contribute power and ampleness.
After manual selection and 2 weeks maceration, the young wine is filled into 2-3 year old 300 litre Austrian oak barrels. Subsequent racking and maturation on the fine lees for about a year leads to better integration of the various blended flavours. Further bottle maturation is recommended for complete development.
Alcohol: 12,5 % Acidity: 5,1 g Residual sugar: 1 g
Tasting Note: Noble flavours of berries and wild cherries are accompanied by delicate toasty and spicy aromas. Initially soft with some Amarelle fruit, spicy clove nuances and mineral impressions develop on the palate. The structure is elegant but firm and the acidity is well integrated. The wine is overall well balanced with finesse and good length.
Food pairing: Perfect companion to young venison with cranberries or wild cherries; wild boar, duck, lamb, barbecue, mature Brie or Camembert. |
