With its extremely early blossoming, which was over by mid-June, 2009 is one of the very precocious vintages, similar to 2003.
The development of the plants differs from vineyards to a vineyard. At the Heiligenstein, for instance, they grape bunches are plentiful, but the dairies are few the air is circulating freely around them, indicating a harvest of medium volume but with excellent maturity.
After blossoming is a time for stocktaking: where hat that the bunches been fertilised and where did the fruit fail to set? There will be no green harvest necessary in some of our vineyards this year.
Slow-growing all young vines carrying too many grapes must be unburdened, in order to allow the energy from the green of the leaves to benefit the roots and the building up of resources of four more difficult days.
Our best of vines should also carry an ideal amount of grapes: not too much, but not too little either. The wind must not become too light or too heavy, but must be balanced, typical, perfect, fine.
Apart from limiting or regulating the yields, a year such as 2009 demands a great attention being given to canopy architecture.
Grapes have reach the best harmony between maturity, a freshness and fruit when they are neither fully exposed to the light, nor absolutely in the shade - and airy location, but protected from the aggressive midday sun. |
